[Featured Brewery Series] Miyagi – Urakasumi

~A bottle that pairs with sushi, carried by the sea breeze of Shiogama~

Hello, this is Nishino from Sake Kōjin.
In this edition of our “Featured Brewery Series,” I would like to introduce Urakasumi, a sake brewery located in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture.

Ever since I began taking sake seriously, Urakasumi has always been a special presence in my heart. After visiting the brewery this time, I want to share once again the charm of this remarkable producer.

Why did I decide to carry Urakasumi?

It started when the shop where I trained during my apprenticeship carried Urakasumi.
The first time I tasted it, I thought honestly, “Wow, this is delicious.”

Even 20–30 years ago, Urakasumi had already established its reputation. It was a must-have for upscale restaurants and sushi shops at the time. I still remember how chefs would all say, “This is the perfect sake to enjoy with food.”

After trying many kinds of sake over the years, I became convinced that Urakasumi belongs in my personal “Top 3” for food-pairing sake. That is why I decided to make it part of our lineup at Shukoujin.

What I admire about Urakasumi as a brewery

Although Urakasumi is widely known as a “large-scale brewery,” it is not focused solely on mass production.
For example, their daiginjo class sakes are still crafted mostly by hand. This surprised me, and I felt a strong sense of sincerity in their brewing philosophy.

They adopt modern equipment when needed, yet never sacrifice quality or delicacy.
Contrary to what one might expect from a big brewery, Urakasumi remains remarkably careful and refined in its brewing.

The style of Urakasumi sake

Urakasumi tends toward clean, crisp, dry sake.
Rather than relying on bold aromas or sweetness, their philosophy is to create sake that truly complements Japanese cuisine and sushi.

It may look simple at first, but it has balance, depth, and subtle elegance.
This is everyday dining sake at its finest—supporting meals while never overpowering them.

The charm of Shiogama

Shiogama, where Urakasumi is based, is one of Miyagi’s most prominent port towns.
It is famous for its fresh seafood and particularly for its many sushi restaurants.

Naturally, Urakasumi has long been cherished locally as “the sake that pairs with sushi.”

My impressions from the visit

Of course, the sake itself is outstanding, which is why I carry it.
But in truth, I also gain inspiration every time I meet Mr. Yokoyama, their sales representative.

He is young, yet so passionate and professional. Each time we meet, I feel motivated to push myself harder.

This visit reminded me once again that sake is not just a product—it embodies the land, the brewery’s history, and the heartfelt dedication of its makers.

As a retailer, I want to be more than just someone who sells bottles. I want to serve as a bridge, delivering that passion and culture to my customers.

In Closing

Urakasumi is a brewery I can recommend with complete confidence—for its flavor, balance, and reliability.
If you are searching for a sake that pairs beautifully with food, please give it a try.

Through this “Featured Brewery Series,” I will continue to introduce wonderful sake breweries from across Japan.

Please look forward to the next installment!
